A concerned couple from Northern California discovered a stray cat in their vicinity. When they fed the animal, they noticed a swelling developing in its nose.

The cat’s condition rapidly deteriorated due to cryptococcus, a fungal infection caused by inhaling the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii, which are commonly found in soil, pigeon droppings, and other outdoor environments.
The couple, unable to care for Khy Shadowstryder’s specialized needs, contacted a rescue organization. Milo’s Sanctuary, located in Los Angeles, rescued the animal.

“He was quite ill, severely underweight, and physically and psychologically exhausted when he arrived at Milo’s. It was challenging to discern his genuine nature. He simply curled up since the entire left side of his face was so diseased and ulcerated”, Milo’s Sanctuary president and founder Michele Hoffman told Embora Cats.
Khy immediately began treatment for cryptococcus and facial issues on his left side. Despite his frailty, he persevered and expressed gratitude while receiving care.

He had an incredible will to live. He conveyed to me that he desired a change and the chance to live by the flame in his eyes. I so assured him that I would fight beside him and stand by his side.
With attentive care, Khy’s healing progressed, and when strong enough, his wound was debrided and treated.

“He began to feel better after a trip to the vet, prescription drugs, and plenty of love and TLC. We often complimented him on his appearance and assured him of our love and safety, Michele told Embora Cats.
Khy’s personality unfolded with each passing day, as he grew more active and inquisitive, always eager to snuggle with those he met.

Khy is a real love-bug, it turns out. He enjoys cuddling with other cats, people, and even pillows. He enjoys eating and getting goodies, and he is gradually learning how to play with toys.

Khy’s condition has improved, yet life-long care, medical treatment, and emotional support are necessary to ensure his well-being.
He has a long way to go before he is fully recovered. Although we are unsure of whether his nose will ever revert to cat size, it doesn’t matter because we adore him just the way he is.

Khy, now a member of the Lifetime Care program at Milo’s Sanctuary, has built relationships with numerous permanent feline residents and consistently shares his affection through his signature kisses.
This affectionate cat will approach any feline friend nearby for some face rubs. When his caretaker calls out to him, he quickly runs over to them. This loving boy is always eager for attention and never wants to miss out on receiving pets and head snuggles.

Michele shared with Embora Cats that “he’s an incredibly sweet and gentle cat who adores tummy rubs and kisses. Though currently shy and reserved, she believes he will soon be excitedly asking for treats and playing with catnip toys.”

Despite the difficulties he has encountered, Khy’s love and generosity continue to shine through. People who know him describe him as an amazing, sweet, and gentle person.
