Earlier this year, Wrenn Rescues in California rescued a litter of sick kittens in need of medical attention. Among the kittens was Matilda Beans, the runt of the litter, who was struggling with an upper respiratory infection.
Ashley Kelley, a fosterer with a specialization in neonatal and special needs kitten care, spoke with Embora Cats about a challenging case. Despite her best efforts, one of her charges became critically ill and required ICU equipment to survive. To ensure the kitten received the best possible care, Ashley brought it to her own home, where she was able to provide the necessary medical attention.
After a diagnosis of severe pneumonia and other health issues, the vets gave a bleak prognosis for the tabby’s survival. However, Ashley remained steadfast in her determination to provide the kitten with the best possible chance of recovery.
For several weeks, Ashley provided Matilda with oxygen, nebulizer treatments, medications, and supportive care. Matilda was deeply grateful and would even roll onto her back to receive belly rubs.
Ashley shared with Embora Cats that despite being told her cat might lose her sight, she persevered. Not only did her cat’s corneal ulcers heal completely, but she also has perfect vision. Ashley is amazed by her cat’s strength.
During Matilda’s recovery, she had to be isolated and spend a lot of time in an incubator. Ashley noticed how lonely she was and decided to place snuggle toys around her for comfort. Matilda found her favorite toy quickly and was no longer lonely.
According to Ashley, when her furry friend was just three weeks old, she gave her a snuggle lamb toy named Lamby Beans. The moment her pet laid eyes on it, she immediately fell in love with it and started sleeping cuddled up to it every night.
As Matilda grew up, she continued to seek comfort and companionship from her trusty lamb. She would obsessively lick it, treating it as if it were her own baby.
Matilda’s dearest toy is Lamby Beans. The kitten wraps her arms around the lamb, grooming it until they both drift off to sleep.
Despite being healthy enough to move to a playpen and meet other fosters, Matilda insisted on keeping her plush friend, Lamby Beans, within eyeshot because she loves it dearly.
The tabby girl has grown into a spirited and mischievous feline, always keeping an eye out for trouble.
Ashley told Embora Cats that her cat is constantly on the move – she rushes towards people to tackle them, throws her litter out of her box dramatically, and voices her displeasure loudly when she can’t leave her very spacious playpen that is filled with toys.
This cat is highly energetic and playful but will take occasional breaks to show affection by cuddling up and licking her owner’s nose. She is always active, playing and wrestling with her kitten friends, and even went through a phase of attacking ankles.
When Matilda needs to recharge, she seeks out the intense snuggles of her beloved stuffed animal, Lamby Beans.
The spicy tabby has achieved the two-pound milestone and is well on her way to a bright future ahead.

The pint-sized kitten has grown into a beautiful and playful young cat, and is now healthy and full of life.
