Otter and his sister Bunny were discovered as helpless orphans in Northern California by a compassionate woman who took them under her care. Caroline Grace, the head of Baby Kitten Rescue, took charge of their medical treatment due to their various health complications. Once they were nursed back to health, the focus turned towards providing them with support for their disabilities and facilitating their adjustment to a new environment. Caroline is committed to helping them find a permanent home where they can stay together.
Located in Los Angeles, California, Baby Kitten Rescue is a non-profit animal rescue organization that specializes in rescuing neonatal, critical care, and special needs kittens. The mission of the organization is to demonstrate that these vulnerable kittens are capable of being saved and are worthy of being rescued. The organization also aims to foster acceptance, inclusion, and empathy, and to highlight that special needs animals can lead fulfilling, meaningful, and joyful lives.
Caroline Grace decided to adopt Bunny & Otter when they were left orphaned, providing them with a caring and nurturing home.

Upon their arrival at the Baby Kitten Rescue, Caroline recounted that Bunny and Otter, who had been but three weeks old at the time, were afflicted with a myriad of ailments, including upper respiratory infections, infected eyes, and severe gastrointestinal distress.
The kittens waited outside for their mother to return, but unfortunately, she never did. As a result, they were left in a vulnerable and unhealthy state.

As soon as she realized the tiny kittens were missing limbs and required hand-feeding from a bottle, she promptly contacted Baby Kitten Rescue for assistance.

This is big brother Otter

At birth, Otter came into the world with an arm on his front right side that was woefully underdeveloped. We approached Caroline to inquire whether he maneuvered on all fours, to which she responded, “Oh no, Otter walks on three legs.
You see, his front right arm has only one toe and a solitary claw, rendering it rather precarious. As a result, he abstains from employing it when he’s mobile.”

He was born with a highly uncommon congenital defect known as ‘Meningoencephalocele’.

A portion of his brain protrudes out of the opening in his skull due to the incomplete closure.

For protection, he dons a custom-fitted helmet that covers his head and shields his brain.

The kitten has grown accustomed to wearing the garment and no longer attempts to scratch or remove it.

Otter loves to explore and is always seeking new adventures.

Nothing makes him happier than playing, snuggling, and unwinding, all while emitting a steady purr.

Little Otter recently underwent an advanced brain surgery procedure to reposition his brain inside his skull and secure the opening with a titanium mesh.

When Embora Cats inquired about Otter’s surgical procedure, Caroline, the director, gladly shared that the surgery was a resounding success. Otter underwent a procedure to relocate his exposed brain into his skull and patch the hole with titanium mesh. The surgery was without any complications and went beyond their expectations.
He is diligently and enthusiastically caring for his sister.

Upon inquiring Caroline about Otter’s need for a helmet, we uncovered that he had to wear it for two weeks post-surgery to shield the incision. However, Otter no longer requires the helmet and is free from its confinement for eternity.
Meet Bunny

Bunny was missing both of her forearms at birth, a result of her congenital bilateral hemimelia condition.

Through the use of her hind legs, the kitten has skillfully adapted to her current circumstances.

Inquired by Embora Cats, Caroline revealed Bunny’s journey of mastering the art of walking on her hind legs. To our surprise, Bunny started her trials at a mere age of four weeks. Caroline even managed to capture Bunny’s first successful attempt on camera, which left her in awe of Bunny’s determination. Bunny persevered and gradually developed the required strength and balance to confidently rely on her back legs for mobility.
Her disability taught Otter how to stand upright on his hind legs as well

Although there are numerous ramps provided for Bunny to climb onto the bed and couch, she still opts to jump straight up from the floor.

It appears that she’s thriving with abundant happiness and self-assurance in her daily existence.

Caroline Grace has been amazed at how well Bunny & Otter have adapted to their disabilities.

Upon encountering the two tiny disabled kittens, our curiosity was piqued about the prevalence of such anomalies in feline populations. Caroline, the caretaker, disclosed that the congenital deformities afflicting Bunny and Otter were exceedingly uncommon.
She conjectured that inbreeding among siblings was the probable cause. Unfortunately, their biological mother remained elusive as the two were discovered outdoors. The mystery of their origins may never be unravelled.
Otter and Bunny share a deep affection for each other, forming an unbreakable bond.

Nurturing disabled kittens is the main mission of Baby Kitten Rescue, an organization dedicated to providing the best possible care for feline furballs in need. Caroline, a dedicated member of the team, recently shared some insights with Embora Cats.
According to Caroline, the organization prides itself on its ability to cater to the needs of kittens with disabilities. Each year, she personally tends to several special needs kittens, and thanks to the support of multiple fosters, Baby Kitten Rescue has been able to expand its reach.
As we head into 2023, the organization hopes to continue its efforts to care for an even greater number of disabled kittens, ensuring they are given the love and attention they deserve.
The two cuddle up, groom one another, observe the feathered friends, and engage in playful activities.

Their remarkable resilience, adaptability, and happiness serve as a true inspiration.

“We inquired about the adoption procedure at Baby Kitten Rescue, and were enlightened by the director on the selection criteria. It was made clear that prospective adopters must pledge to refrain from declawing their feline companions, prohibit their cats from wandering freely outdoors, commit to annual veterinary checkups, and most importantly, guarantee the return of their cats to Baby Kitten Rescue in the event that they become incapable of providing them with proper care.”
Caroline’s heart swells with joy and her faith in humanity is restored when she witnesses people showering their love on these two kittens who require special attention.

Carolina vowed to ensure the inseparable duo’s joint adoption, citing her profound gratitude for the fostering experience as the reason for her dedication. “They hold an indescribable significance in my heart,” she beamed.
Caroline Grace divulged details about the adoption process of the sibling kittens, emphasizing that applications for Bunny & Otter are not yet being accepted. “We must keep a watchful eye on Otter for 2-3 months following his operation to ensure a complication-free recovery,” she explained.
Once this period concludes without any complications, applications for the adoption of Otter & Bunny will open, ensuring their bond remains unbroken. Prospective adopters must be willing to accommodate Bunny & Otter’s needs, including installing ramps to reach higher surfaces and implementing low-sided litter boxes for easy access.
